okay then good people, time to get the ball rolling.

i can accept projects in a variety of formats and codecs, but remember that the better quality source you can give me the better it will look on the DVD

if you want to do a commentary then record that separately.

so what can I accept for vobbing with a minimum of pain?

well the options are mailing me your content on:

DVD
miniDV
VHS
CD

or rendering out your project from a variety of standard codecs (quicktime, windows media, mpeg, real, mjpeg ...) and making it available for me to download.

let's start by declaring what we intend to submit.

Ad Astra (~20mins miniDV)
with these extras:
commentary
rough edit sound effects track
side-by-side comparison before/after colour grading (if i can find the ungraded copy)

projects for submission must be completed and must be with me by the end of March

everyone who submits a work will naturally get a copy of the finished DVD mailed to them.

when will the final deadline be, i was in for exposure short #1, i have a film just going into production, so what is the latest i can get a film to you, cheers

Do you want the file on a DVD? Or as a playable DVD if you know what I mean?

Is there a time limit and limit to number of films. 1 hour of DVD divided by 20 film makers equates to 2 1/2 - 3 mins each. If we're degrading quality I'd like to know before submiting.

end of march is the deadline for submissions - if you can't submit a full product by that time then think about getting a trailer together.

good points by machead - given a choice i would prefer non-vobbed mpeg2 (ie vob source file as a mpg or mp2/wav/ac3 streams) simply because i'm not familiar with importing vobs into my authoring software - although i guess it should be very simple(!)

quality wise, i think i'll wait on how many submissions i get before deciding what to do. you can get 2 hours of reasonable quality mpeg2 on DVD5 (those pirated versions of Titanic even look okay) - the degraded macroblocks are generally only noticable on LCD displays, not on a TV.

i'll start by encoding non-mpeg2/dv submissions at lower bitrates since quality loss won't be so much of an issue if someone submits something in mpeg1 that needs transcoding to mpeg2 for example.

miniDV submissions i'll probably capture to mp2 using my pinnacle dc1000, else it will be encoded to mpeg2 by Vegas Video, which uses Mainconcept MPEG2 codec which I'm sure has its critics.

anyhow, once all submissions are in at the end of march and if there's way too much for a DVD5 then i could always make it a two-disc set ...

The file I'll give you will be a QuickTime DV-PAL. 720x576, millions of colours, Stereo, 48khz, 16bit, 25fps.

Is this OK?
What format do you want the DVD in (PC Hybrid) or Mac OS extended. I can do both but others may need to know.

any disc you send me needs to be readble by a PC, so i guess PC Hybrid would be the right option.

yep, how stuff was made is to be a major point of this release (although not mandatory)

i'd imagine if everyone supplied 'extras' it would most certainly become a 2-disc release.
